The biggest jellyfish in the world was discovered near Primorye’s shores
For the first time, the hairy cyanea was caught on video in the Far Eastern Marine Reserve in the south of Primorye. This is the world's largest jellyfish, which can reach two meters in dome diameter and have tentacles up to 30 meters long.
Lucky underwater operators caught a young specimen, the diameter of its dome is about 70 cm. Cyanea grow to be real giants in the Arctic and Antarctic latitudes, where their dome can reach two meters in diameter.
Now, in late autumn, cyaneans feel most comfortable in the reserve and can be found more often than in the warm season. This is due to the fact that the sharp temperature jumps at different depths observed in summer are smoothed out a little by October-November, which creates favorable temperature conditions for cyanobacteria.
