"The absence of a peace treaty with Japan is nonsense": Vladimir Putin speaks out about the Kurils
The topic of the ownership of the Kuril Islands was raised again at the plenary session of the EEF. Vladimir Putin stated categorically that the Kurils are ours, but he called the absence of a peace treaty with Japan a nonsense.
"When talking about a peace treaty with Japan, we must ensure a peaceful future. And this means solving the issue of the possibility of stationing the U.S. military forces and strategic systems on Japanese territory. We have asked our Japanese partners this question, but we have not yet received an answer. In this sense, the ball is still in their court," the president of Russia said at the plenary session of the EEF.
He noted that the countries are interested in a complete normalisation of relations. Russia has never refused to have a dialogue with Japan, but the Japanese colleagues have always changed their mind.
