According to the information of press service of the federal university, the team of scientists of the Far Eastern Federal University (FENU) and the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with Chinese colleagues will study the problem of earthquake prediction and minimization of its consequences.

A group of researchers under auspices of Nikolay Shestakov, the head of the Department of Geodesy, Cadastre and Land Management of Engineering School received a grant for the study of modern tectonics and rheological characteristics of the lithosphere of the North-East Asia. Their project appeared to be a winner of the joint contest arranged by the Russian Foundation of Fundamental Studies and the State Foundation of Natural Sciences of China.

As noted by Nikolay Shestakov, modern science still cannot accurately and timely predict the earthquake. Russian Far East also remains poorly studied in a geodynamic sphere. Unification of Russian and Chinese unique measurement information, tools and computing resources will help to achieve fundamentally new results.

According to the information, much attention will be paid to the Japanese earthquake that happened on 11th of  March, 2011, because this was an unique natural phenomenon with long lasting effects. Nikolay Shestakov said, that the information obtained will clarify and supplement present data on seismic activity of the southern part of Far East of Russia and Primorsky region in particular.
