The first greenhouse gases monitoring station in Far East will be established in Vladivostok.
The first greenhouse gases monitoring station in Far East will be established in Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) on Russky island. Place for the unique scientific laboratory was chosen by the head of Far Eastern Climate Smart LAB, laboratory for Climate Research, Nobel laureate, Riccardo Valentini. Station will be located on campus territory in the park area in front of the student center (Building A). It’s planned to be fully equipped by September 2016.
In the framework of the new climate laboratory creation, several similar installations will be installed in different areas within Primorsky Territory. According to Riccardo Valentini, such monitoring system will be used in Far East for the first time. Information about the soil, plants and air condition will be transmitted from them to the single database, this information will be used for analysis of greenhouse gas emissions and assessment of environmental and human activity impact on global warming, as well as for the creation of climate change scenarios in the Asia-Pacific region as whole.
The main goal of this laboratory is development of modern environmental policy in the Asia-Pacific region, based on an analysis of global patterns of climate change and regional environmental monitoring.
Riccardo Valentini stated: "I am sure that within next few years we will be able to make FEFU the greatest center for climate research in the whole Asia-Pacific region. Our research will help significantly to examine not only the climate processes, but also to evaluate the environmental capital of the Russian Far East, more accurately predict climate change on a global scale, and, accordingly, will be demanded by international academic and expert community.”
