New variant of coronavirus AY.4.2 was detected in Russia. This was stated by Kamil Khafizov, head of the scientific group of the development of new methods for diagnosing human diseases at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor. 

Khafizov said that this variant has already been detected in sporadic cases on Russian territory. He explained that the AY.4.2 variant is only one of many offshoots of the "delta" lineage, which may have some advantages over the original and other versions of the virus. How much more contagious this version is is still hard to say, the expert added.

On October 19, it became known that a new form of the coronavirus had begun to spread in Great Britain. Experts speculate that variant AY.4.2 may be the most infectious form detected since the pandemic began.
