As a result of the victory of the Soviet Union on the Far East and according to the previous agreements with the allies, the USSR received, occupied by the Japanese in 1905, South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.
Ruslan Kulepanov, the member of the Institute of history, archeology and ethnography of the Far East: « Japan did not suffer as much as Germany after the defeat. The Japanese capitulation in August of 1945 was convenient for the Americans, because if the war continued, the USSR would want to occupy Hokkaido island. And this action would lead to the split of Japan and making a part of it a member of the Soviet Union».
Years after the war Russia continues to care about the memory of the Japanese soldiers, who gave their lives for their military government. Many monuments and obelisks related to that period of the war can be found all over the region.
On September 2, 1945 Japan signed the unconditional surrender act. The Second World War was over.
