Scientifically they are called gray, but in fact, they are white and hardly seen on the snowy background. The unusual appearance of the rear birds within the city limits attracted attention of passers-by Citizens of Arsenyev could see unusual scenery – river-bank is icebound and a few gray herons lingered in an ice-hole for a few days on their way to the south. Some try to get closer and take a picture of a heron. And they even succeed.
Alain Chaprasova, a resident of the city: "I was surprised to see such a rare bird. Have never seen it in the zoo. We have seen wild birds before - for example, osprey. But gray heron - for the first time".
A couple of gray herons chose a river of Arsenyev city for a stay. They fly from one ice-hole to another and hunt. They don’t act like the sick animals. According to the words of nature conservation organization specialists, such behavior is quite normal for a gray herons.
Boris Viktorovskii, expert of Primorsky region department of State Hunting Supervisory says: "At present it is possible to see gray heron within the city limits, because this bird is not shy. Flying to the south, they stopped here to catch some food – frogs and small fish. As soon as it gorges itself with the food, it will fly to the south. "
Grey Herons pass the winter in North and South Korea, in China. Perhaps the warm autumn made the white birds linger in our latitudes. Later they will huddle together and fly to the southern skies.
